Does the IIFYM Diet (If It Fits Your Macros) Work? The Truth About IIFYM!

The IIFYM diet has gained quite some popularity among the fitness community thanks to numerous YouTube bodybuilders and fitness channels promoting the diet such as Matt Ogus, Josef Rakich, the 3D Muscle Journey, and the Hodgetwins. 

This has led to huge debates between fitness channels and has really transformed the fitness community's views on dieting.

So to get to the main point, does the IIFYM diet work? Or is healthy eating the way to go?

Simply put, the IIFYM does work.

Lets first define what IIFYM is about.

It claims that the body does not identify any foods as healthy or unhealthy.

Instead it counts the macronutrients. 

The macronutrients are proteins, carbohydrates, and fats.

The micronutrients are vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and etc.

So 5 grams of protein from chicken is the same as 5 grams from a pop tart.

Yay! So we can throw our chicken out the window and eat Pop-tarts all day right?

Nope! The truth is, you're still going to have to eat healthy 80-90% of the time?

Huh? Isn't IIFYM just eating Pop-tarts, Ice Cream, and Kit Kats all day?

The thing is, IIFYM isn't as simple as it sounds and there's some things you need to consider.

Lets first get this out of the way: No matter what, you MUST count your macros, even if you eat "healthy".

You can hit your macros with unhealthy foods. But it's hard to hit your micros with unhealthy foods.

So many people just ignore the micros and just count their macros!

Although many people wish they could, it's very hard to get all your vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants, and nutrients your body needs from foods like Kit Kats.

Without those micros, what you will notice is that your overall life quality will decrease and fail. Your body NEEDS those micros to function properly.

And health is the number one priority to me and my clients. 

More on the IIFYM v.s. Typical Bodybuilder's Healthy Diet:

The only difference between IIFYM and the typical diet is that IIFYM dieters have a small "not clean" food everyday and clean eaters eat a big "not clean" meal once a week.

There's not much difference really! This isn't some completely different diet that gives you way better results.

So to wrap this up, make IIFYM not just stand for "If It Fits Your Macros", but also stand for "If It Fits Your Micros."

IIFYM has been misinterpreted and taught incorrectly. Very few people actually understand the diet.

If you're going to follow IIFYM, I highly recommend you actually look into it and learn about it from someone who actually understands it.

Because when done properly, it is a great effective diet to follow.
