You’ve had a stressful week at work or you just broke up with your boyfriend or girlfriend. The first thing you want to do is to go out for drinks with your friends to take the edge off, or to numb the pain. We’ve all been there. But the next morning you wake up and your problems are still there, only now you have a hangover to deal with. Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol can actually induce emotional feelings of depression and anxiety. So why not choose exercise instead, as a form of relieving stress. When you exercise, your body releases chemicals called endorphins. Endorphins are chemicals that act as natural painkillers and also improve the ability to sleep.

Stress is caused by events in your life which are “external” factors that cannot be avoided. Using exercise to manage the body’s reaction to stress is the healthiest form of relief. Exercise essentially burns away the chemicals like cortisol that cause stress, allowing you to walk out of the gym at the end of your workout, feeling a natural “high.”

Exercise is the most underutilized antidepressant, yet it is the most effective one. So the next time you feel like you are carrying the weight of your world on your shoulders, head to the gym and sweat out your stress!
