Where To Begin!!!!

When I first joined the gym, I had absolutely no clue what to do. It was very overwhelming. There were guys with big huge muscles that were lifting heavy weights and doing movements that looked so complicated. There were girls who were in amazing shape who looked like they worked out five hours a day. And then there was me...intimated and nervous is an understatement! So I got on the treadmill and I walked...every single day. And that’s all I did for a long time because I was too afraid to use a machine the wrong way and look stupid doing it. Eventually, I asked for help. I mean after all, Amer The Hammer is my brother. He showed me proper technique, what exercises I should be doing and taught me the reasons for doing a lot of those exercises, especially as a beginner.

I realize not everyone has a family member who is a fitness guru, but hiring a personal trainer is the best thing you can do for yourself as you begin your fitness journey. This is so important as you learn proper form and learn about which exercises are right for you and your fitness goals. I see many people at the gym bouncing around from one machine to the next, not having any structure in their workouts.

As a beginner, I would highly recommend doing full body workouts such as squats, deadlifts, planks and push-ups. Trying out different cardio equipment such as the Stairmaster or resistance bike, rather than walking on the treadmill would be more effective for weight loss. You can walk anywhere so why go to the gym and walk on the treadmill?

Ask for help if you are at the gym and want to use a machine but have no clue if you are doing it the right way. Most people at the gym don’t have the friendliest look on their faces while working out, but 99% of the time, are very friendly and would love to give you tips or advice if you just ask.

Gain as much information and knowledge as you can until you feel confident and comfortable going into the gym on your own and performing a workout that is an effective one. We are all constantly learning, so why not learn to do it the right way!
