Why “diets” don’t work

Why “diets” don’t work

The real reasons why “diets” don’t work.

You always hear people talking about the new fad diet everyone is on, whether they’re cutting out carbs, eating 1200 calories a day or drinking juice all day long. There are many forms of “dieting” but following a generic, cookie cutter diet only leads to setting yourself up for failure. Everyone’s body is different. Someone who is 175lbs needs a different caloric intake than someone who weighs 130lbs.

About 95% of people who lose weight by dieting will regain it within 1-5 years. Dieting, by definition, is a temporary food plan, which won’t work in the long run. Your body does not want to starve. It will respond to overly-restrictive dieting by slowing down your metabolism, making it harder for you to lose weight.

Dieting has been associated with an increased risk of weight gain and binge eating. The reason for this is that when you restrict your calories to such low levels, your body is forced to enter “starvation mode” which ultimately causes you to store foods as fat. Your metabolism slows down, causing you to plateau, or even causing weight gain. Another reason is that most people cannot stick to diets for long periods of time. When they start eating normal again, they gain all their weight back and sometimes even more than they started with.

It is important to make a lifestyle change if you’re looking to lose weight, rather than hopping on the band wagon of the new trendy diet everyone else is doing. Work with someone who truly understands health and fitness, that can customize an individualized plan for your specific body and goals or needs. Your body is unique and should be treated as such.
